Lacedaemonius quidam, Tarenti in Italia conditor. Nam cum in eo bello, quod Lacedaemonii cum Atheniensibus an Messeniis? Aristodemô Rege gesserunt, utrinque vires attritae essent, Spartani iuventute exhausti edixerunt, ut virgines quibuslibet nullô discrimine sui copiam facerent. Sedatis autem bellis, iuvenes incertis parentibus nati, cum et patriae et sibi essent opprobrio (nam Partheniatae dicebantur) acceptô duce Phalanthô, qui auctor consilii fuisse dicitur, octavô ab Hercule, patriam reliquerunt, delatique ad breve oppidum Calabriae, quod Tharos Neptuni fil. condiderat, id auxerunt, et priscô nomine Tarentum appellârunt, Olymp. 19.
